Sara Coffin is an independent dance artist, choreographer, educator, and the long-standing Co-Artistic Director of Mocean Dance, where she has helped shape the Atlantic Canadian dance landscape for over a decade. With a career spanning more than 25 years, Sara brings a wealth of experience to both the studio and the stage.

She holds an MFA in Choreography from Smith College (USA), a BFA in Dance from Simon Fraser University, and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Dalhousie University, combining artistry with a strong foundation in movement science.

Sara’s teaching practice is wide-ranging and inclusive, encompassing post-secondary institutions, professional training programs, recreational and pre-professional studios, public school residencies, and international workshops. She has served as adjunct faculty for the Five College Consortium in Massachusetts and has been a guest artist and lecturer at institutions including NSCAD University, Holland College School of Performing Arts, and Universidad Rafael Landívar in Guatemala City.

Known for her thoughtful, somatic-based teaching approach, Sara encourages conceptual learning, functional anatomy awareness, and embodied creativity. Her classes are grounded in momentum, weight flow, and floorwork, offering dancers tools to explore and articulate their unique voices.

Sara has been teaching at Halifax Dance since 2011 and served as Co-Artistic Director of the Young Company from 2018 to 2020. Through her work as an artist and educator, she continues to inspire the next generation of dancers to move with intention, intelligence, and imagination.
